Sign Club
Welcome to the Sign Club of the Emerson Elementary School in Levittown, PA.
Director Cathy Ivins has been teaching sign language and directing the members in songs since 1997!
In 2012, director Mrs. Ivins held a workshop for new members to learn American Sign Language and about Deaf Culture. They learned the manual alphabet, learned to introduce themselves in sign language, as well as signs for family and animals. They then signed Row Your Boat and enjoyed a sign language bingo game. They met again to learn holiday signs in sign language and the song "The 12 Days of Christmas"! Watch the video here:
They will perform The Twelve Days of Christmas in ASL at the school's winter concert!
The Emerson Sign Club performed our favorite song "Together We Can Change the World" at our school's Barnes and Noble Night as well as the Spring 2012 Chorus Concert! Check us out on our school tube channel: Together We Can Change the World. We will be hosting a "Signing Bee" at the end of the school year! Members are able to practice for the event in their classrooms using our wonderful "Signing for Kids" sign language dictionary by Mickey Flodin, donated to every 4th-6th grade classroom, thanks to one of our wonderful families! Members were also able to purchase Sign Club tees through a discount as well!
The Emerson Sign Club performed the John Lennon song "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" in ASL at the school's winter 2011 concerts. They did a fabulous job on this difficult but incredible song! You can see the afternoon performance here: http://bit.ly/tKypCQ. Half of the members were able to attend a before-school lesson to learn the song in ASL and practiced online afterwards with Mrs. Ivins.

He befriends an orangutan who knows sign language.
On December 8, 2009, Emerson Sign Club gave an amazing performance of Smash Mouth's Nuttin For Christmas in sign language at the Winter Concert! At the 2pm concert, 4th-6th grade members performed. Later that evening, just the 5th-6th grade members performed. The soloists did a great job! Photos can be seen by clicking the photo tab above. Our Sign Class was held on Thursday November 19th from 1:00 dismissal (for report card conferences) until 2:30 pm for new members in grades 4th-6th grades. Mrs. Ivins taught the manual alphabet and simple signs for family, food and animals, in addition to sign language history and deaf culture.
On May 5th the Sign Club performed the Camp Rock song "This Is Me" by Demi Lovato during the Emerson Spring Concert at Franklin Middle School! The entire sign club performed during the afternoon performance. Sign Club members also in chorus performed at the evening concert as well.
Our previous performance was held on December 2, 2008, at the Emerson Winter Concert at Franklin's auditorium. We performed Mr. Grinch. All members performed for the students and teachers during the 2pm concert. For the evening concert, only sign club members who were in chorus (or attended with family) performed. Both concerts were amazing!
