Second Grade
Mrs. Jennifer O'Brien Ms. Amy Waldron
Here is a brief overview of the skills we are working on in second grade. Please use this site as a resource to extend your child's learning at home.
Math: Basic math facts with sums equally up to 18. *Note* These basic math facts need to become automatic. Please review the math sheet in their b.e.e. binder as well as making flash cards to drill these facts at home.
Language Arts: We have reviewed homophones, synonyms/antonyms and multiple meaning words. We have introduced the students to the Proofreading Editing Marks. Our students write everyday in their journals and will begin to start the writing process. Sounds, sounds and more sounds! Phonics is a major instructional piece as we are reviewing the sounds of the alphabet along with vowel sounds, digraphs, blends and welded sounds. All this will help our students be able to decode words while reading.
Reading: Theme 4: Amazing Animals. Throughout this theme, we will read stories about animals that do AMAZING things. Officer Buckle and Gloria, Ant, and The Great Ball Game. While reading these stories, we will work on target skills such as, questioning, cause and effect, drawing conclusions, and making inferences. Review your child's work with them everyday and ask them to explain how they completed the task. This will reinforce the skills we taught during the day.
Social Studies: My Community. This year, second grade will focus on Community in Social Studies. Projects, quizzes and tests will be given.
