The Bristol Township School District Board of Directors voted in January to approve Al Oberman as the new director of special education and pupil services. He is replacing Lou deFonteny whose last day in the District was February 17 and the new director of pupil services at Palisades School District. Oberman’s start date is March 17.

Working in special education for 21 years, Oberman has served as the supervisor of special education at Upper Dublin School District for the past year and a half. Prior to that, from 2016-2019, Oberman held a supervisory position at BTSD, also as a supervisor of special education. He is looking forward to transitioning from a supervisory to director role since this will enable him to focus on the entire school district rather than individual schools. He is also excited to return to BTSD.

“Bristol Township has an extremely strong professional staff dedicated to student success,” said Oberman. “It felt more like a family here than anywhere else I’ve worked. I’m happy to come back to be a part of Bristol Township on a larger scale.”

Oberman has worked in special education his entire career, which started when he taught elementary, middle and high school students for 15 years.

“I’ve always had the belief that all students should have the opportunity to learn and the opportunity for success post-school. I am a big proponent of equity for all students,” he said.

Currently, Oberman is completing his Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in educational leadership and administration from Delaware Valley University. He earned his special education certification from Penn State University, and completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Alvernia University.

When Oberman returns to BTSD, he will work with deFonteny to ensure a smooth transition into the role and make sure students finish the school year successfully.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back to Bristol Township and getting started,” he said.

The BTSD community is happy to welcome him back as well.

“We were very impressed by Al’s dedication and commitment to our students when he worked in BTSD before and are looking forward to collaborating with him in his new role as director,” said Superintendent Melanie Gehrens, Ed.D.
